Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives

''Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives'' is the first studio album by Guillermo Scott Herren. It was released on Warp Records in 2001.〔 The album features vocal contributions from Mikah 9, Aesop Rock, MF Doom, and Sam Prekop.〔
==Background and production==
In the mid to late 1990s, Guillermo Scott Herren returned to Decatur, Georgia after spending a period in New York. Herren worked at a local recording studio helping his friend's band mix their group's record. Heren made a deal with the studio's owner to work for him and handle the hip hop clients, and in return he would buy Herren a Music Production Center (MPC).〔 While working at the studio, Herren met Joshua Kay and Romulo del Castillo, two Miami-based producers who had founded Schematic Records, a label known for Intelligent dance music (IDM).〔 Herren began recording and composing music himself on his MPC before manipulating the results into music that fit Schematic's aesthetic.〔 Through his studio work, Herren would later meet DJ Klever, a turntablist DJ who would later go on to would later go on to win US championship titles at the DMC World DJ Championships.〔
In 1999 Herren signed to British label Warp, signing him for both the Prefuse 73 music and his first album under the Savath & Savalas alias.〔 For his debut album, Herren had two turntables plugged into his MPC.〔 Most of the samples and edits from the album are taken from hip hop records, including Nas, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Erykah Badu.〔 The album features rapping from MCs Mikah 9, Aesop Rock and MF Doom.〔 When working with an MC, Herren kept the vocals intact.〔 The chopped up vocals were described as a tribute to Miami bass music and artists such as Mantronix.〔
